Materials and finishes, explained for Mumbai homes
A modular kitchen has two parts: the carcass inside and the finish outside. In Mumbai the carcass matters most, because humidity attacks the board, not the colour. Marine (BWP) plywood and HDHMR handle moisture best; acrylic, laminate and PU lacquer all work well as finishes, and differ mainly in shine, repairability and price.

Carcass: what sits behind the shutter
| Board | How it behaves | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Marine / BWP plywood | Best resistance to moisture, holds screws well, heaviest and costliest | Under-sink units, base units, humid kitchens |
| HDHMR | Dense and uniform, takes machining and edge banding cleanly, good moisture resistance | Full kitchens and wardrobes where a smooth finish matters |
| MDF / HDF | Very smooth surface, ideal under lacquer, less tolerant of standing water | Shutters and wardrobe internals in dry areas |
| Particle board | Lightest and cheapest, weakest with moisture and screws | Budget builds and low-load internals only |
A quick test when comparing quotes: ask which board goes under the sink. If the answer is the same board as the rest of the kitchen, ask why.
Finishes: what you see and touch
| Finish | Look | Daily life | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laminate | Matt, textured or gloss; very wide range | Hard-wearing, hides marks, easy to clean | Lowest |
| Acrylic | High gloss, deep colour, mirror-like | Shows fingerprints on dark shades; scratches show | Mid to high |
| PU lacquer | Smooth matt or gloss, any shade | Can be re-polished if damaged; needs careful cleaning | High |
| Veneer | Real wood grain, each panel different | Warm and repairable, needs periodic care | High |
| Glass | Back-painted or frosted, reflective | Wipes clean, shows dust, needs careful edges | High |
| Aluminium profile shutters | Slim frames with glass or panel inserts | Good for tall and overhead units | Mid to high |
What survives Mumbai humidity
Humidity does its damage at the edges and the joints, not in the middle of a panel. That is why machine edge banding on all four sides matters more than the brand name on the board, and why the strip under the sink is the first place to check in any kitchen five years old.
- Seal every edge, including the hidden ones inside the carcass
- Use a moisture-tolerant board wherever water is likely: sink, dishwasher, washing area
- Leave a service gap behind the carcass so damp walls do not sit against the board
- Wipe spills rather than letting water stand along the bottom edge of a shutter
Countertops
Granite, quartz and sintered stone are the three common choices. Granite is hard and forgiving of heat, quartz is more uniform and stain-resistant, sintered stone handles heat and scratches best and costs the most. What matters as much as the material is the joint position and the support under it.
See them in person
More than 28 finishes are on display at our showroom in Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri West. Photos on a screen cannot show how a matt acrylic reads in daylight or how a veneer grain runs. Come and see the samples, or ask us to send swatches to your architect.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, marine plywood or HDHMR?
Marine (BWP) plywood resists moisture best and holds screws well, so it is the safer pick for base and under-sink units. HDHMR is denser and more uniform, which gives a smoother finish and cleaner machining. Many kitchens use both, each where it performs best.
Acrylic or laminate, which should I choose?
Acrylic gives a deep, glossy, seamless look and costs more. Laminate is tougher against daily knocks, hides marks better and costs less. In a busy family kitchen, laminate often ages better; for a showpiece kitchen, acrylic looks richer.
Does acrylic scratch easily?
Any high-gloss surface shows fine scratches and fingerprints, especially in dark shades. Clean with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, never a scrubbing pad.
What does BWP or BWR on plywood mean?
They are grades of moisture resistance. BWR is boiling water resistant, BWP is boiling water proof, the higher grade, which is why BWP or marine ply is preferred for kitchens.
How many finishes do you offer?
More than 28, across laminate, acrylic, PU lacquer, veneer, glass and aluminium profile shutters, all on display at the Andheri showroom.
Which finish is easiest to maintain?
Matt laminate. It hides fingerprints and small marks, cleans with a damp cloth, and does not need polishing.
